Superimposition Protocols

Superimposition Protocols

ObiScanner 3D face scans can be superimposed in 3 different ways to any IntraOral scan model (.stl, .obj, .ply)

Method 1 - Simple Registration

By leveraging the superimposition algorithms of most dental and free CAD software, you can superimpose directly the face scan and the intraoral scan without any reference tray.
Here below you can watch two tutorials on how to achieve this fast superimposition with Exocad and DWOS.
This is the fastest method, but also the less accurate, as some distortion might interfere with the correct alignment between the teeth of the intra-oral scan and the teeth of the face scan.

Method 2 - IRT (Individual Reference Tray)

This protocol requires two appointments.
A first one, where the patient’s teeth gets scanned with an intraoral scan, is followed by the design and print/milling of a Individual Reference Tray, as described in this Open Access paper.
In the following video MeshMixer (a free CAD software you can download from here) is used to design the IRT.

We provide the basic stl shapes in order to design the external part of the IRT (the three shapes).
Make sure to check out the video (and the 0.3x resizing) and download the models from here.

In the second appointment the patient gets his/her face scanned both with and withouth the IRT.
This is the slowest method, but also the most accurate, as less superimpositions must be performed in the CAD software, since the position of the (intra-oral) teeth is known in respect to the IRT scanned with ObiScanner.

Method 3 - SRT (Standard Reference Tray)

This protocol requires only one appointment and the Advanced Scan Module.
  1. Take an intra-oral scan.
  2. Take a second intra-oral scan (or just re-scan the central part) while the patient has the U-shaped part of the SRT between his/her teeth (use an impression material to stabilize it)
  3. Take a face scan
  4. Take a face scan of the patient with the SRT assembled (U-shaped and rectangular-shaped parts).
  5. Superimpose the 3D models by following this video steps.
You can download the models of the SRT from here.
